Sublimation is how personalised mugs, tumblers and apparel are actually made. The SP-1 is Brother's compact desktop sublimation printer — print the design, heat-press it onto the item, and the ink becomes part of the surface rather than sitting on top of it.
Who this is for
- Personalised gift businesses — mugs, tumblers, coasters, keyrings, mousepads.
- Apparel decorators working with polyester and poly-blend garments.
- Embroiderers adding a second product line for items that cannot be embroidered.
How sublimation works
You print a mirrored design onto sublimation paper using sublimation ink, then press it onto a coated or polyester surface with a heat press. Under heat the ink turns to gas and bonds into the material. The result does not crack, peel or fade the way a surface transfer does.
Important: sublimation only works on polyester, poly-blends and specially coated blanks. It will not work on 100% cotton or on uncoated ceramics.
What it does well
- Compact desktop footprint — fits a workroom or spare-room studio
- Genuine Brother sublimation ink system for consistent, colour-accurate results
- Straightforward workflow: design, print, press
- Matched Brother sublimation paper available for reliable transfers

Questions people ask
Can I sublimate cotton t-shirts? No. Sublimation needs polyester or a poly-blend. On a 50/50 blend you get a faded, vintage look — which some people want deliberately.
Is a heat press included? No, and you cannot skip it. Budget for one alongside the printer.
Can I use normal inkjet ink? No — sublimation requires sublimation ink and this printer uses the Brother SP01 cartridges.
