The JA1400 is the machine we hand to someone who has never sewn before — and it is still going years later. Simple dials, 14 stitches, a top-loading bobbin you can actually see, and an LED light so you are not squinting at your seam. Nothing on it will intimidate you.
Who this machine is for
- First-time sewists learning on a machine that will not fight them.
- Menders and alterers — hems, buttons, school uniforms, curtains.
- Students and gifts — light enough to carry, simple enough to learn in an afternoon.
Probably not for you if you sew heavy denim daily or want computerised stitch selection — look at the FS60X instead.
What it does well
- 14 built-in stitches selected on a single dial — no menus, no screen
- 4-step buttonhole
- Auto-set stitch length and width, so there is less to get wrong
- Free arm converts from flatbed for sleeves, cuffs and trouser legs
- Top-load drop-in bobbin — easy to set, easy to see how much thread is left
- LED sewing light
- Ships with an instructional DVD including two starter projects
