The GS3700 is the workhorse of the mechanical range. Thirty-seven stitches, a solid feel under your hands, and enough range to take you from mending to real dressmaking without ever needing a screen.

Who this machine is for

  • Regular home sewists who have outgrown a 14- or 17-stitch machine.
  • Light dressmaking and home décor — garments, cushions, curtains, kids' clothes.
  • People who prefer dials to menus. Mechanical means fewer things to go wrong.

Probably not for you if you want computerised stitch selection, lettering or one-step buttonholes — look at the A16 or FS60X.

What it does well

  • 37 built-in stitches — a genuinely useful spread of utility, stretch and decorative options
  • Buttonhole function
  • Drop-in top-load bobbin
  • Free arm for sleeves, cuffs and trouser hems
  • Sturdy build that keeps the needle stable at speed

Questions people ask

Is 37 stitches actually useful, or is it marketing? The utility stitches you will use weekly are maybe six of them. The rest matter when you start doing stretch seams, blind hems and decorative edges — which is exactly when people outgrow a 14-stitch machine.

Mechanical or computerised? Mechanical is simpler, cheaper to keep running and perfectly capable. Computerised gives you one-step buttonholes, precise stitch settings and often lettering. Neither is "better" — it depends on what you make.
